The new Sambou Toura Drame School architecture project is designed for the “Senegal Elementary School -Sambou Toura Drame Archstorming competition”.
A school is not only a place for learning, it is a social common ground. The school consists of three buildings which shape an inner courtyard around the existing tree on the lot: Moraceae The main aim of this project is to use natural and recyclable materials of the area such as bamboo and clay. Also, involving local people in the entire process of construction, including cultivating and manufacturing the bamboo. We designed spaces, both exterior and interior, based on climate adaptation. Natural ventilation, lighting and rainwater harvesting systems are some of the focal points of the project. Musical rain gutters and other instruments are integrated into the project in order to create a synergy between architecture, climate and people. Social integration is possible through architecture by designing a place open to everybody to make people feel emotionally safe.
